I worked for 13 months at an agency that used the family teaching model on staff. It was distressing to me. Does anyone out there have any feelings they would like to share about this? I was told that agencies that use teaching family model also use it on staff. Anyone feel it is beneficial or, like me, that it is detrimental, at least to some staff? I am a therapist and feel it is not a good idea to use this model on staff. Is there any research on this? Getting put onto tantrum especially on the email and getting what I regarded as big lectures, only scared me and created a lot of anxiety, which was detrimental to my job performance. __________________ Emily K Harris |

Reply with quote | #2 | What you are describing does not sound anything like the principles and concepts of the Teaching-Family Model (TFM) that I was trained. If someone is truly using the principles and concepts of the Teaching-Family Model they would be approaching every interaction with praise and statements that build up the person with whom they are interacting. Even correction would be viewed as positive and self esteem building by the recipient of the interaction. It sounds like you have experienced a misinterpretation of the Teaching-Family Model principles and concepts. That's too bad because it is supposed to employ a wonderful human interactive style the is designed to do things like teach social skills, set and achieve goals, and build self-esteem.
Your terminology "used the Teaching-Family Model on staff" sounds like you felt attacked just as if someone used a weapon "on" you. I would hope that nobody would ever use the Teaching-Family Model "on" anyone else. Instead, I would hope that everyone would simply use the true principles and concepts of the Teaching-Family Model in every interaction with every person. In other words, it should not be something you use on anyone but rather it is something to be learned and integrated into your everyday interactive style. If everyone did that, it would be a more positive and productive world. __________________ Mike Hussey - Technology Support Specialist

I have heard various staff use the model from the praise to the teaching to the rationale and on when speaking to staff they are parallel with or with staff they supervise. I think the model is highly effective, but when I am speaking with a colleague or supervisor I would like "real talk" vs being spoken to in the model. A softened approach would at least be easier to hear. I would struggle to listen if I felt like I was being spoken to as a consumer in need of change. |
